the php manual build is too old here

Hello! The docs page (the php manual) found on phpbuilder is from the year 2000. A lot has changed in the past three years so showing such an old manual does more harm than good. Please update your copy of the PHP manual.

Yeah, I started it last year and got stuck on something. /manual2 is the working copy. I really need to get back to it. Thanks for bringing it up.

Consider updating it every month or so (I assume you will but jic 🙂 as manual2/ is pretty old too. The manual is pretty active with commits happening daily, PHP 5 information is slowly trickling in as well.

IMO it's so usual as mods and admins of PhpBuilder are working hard to EDIT USERS SIGNATURES , POSTS , STOP SPAMMERS ...

BTW, onlyphp, were you referring to my signature? I hope not, unless linking to the PHP manual is considered spam! I do work on the manual but don't make any money off people using it ;-)

Thanks Philip. That's actually what caused me to drop the ball. Stigs and a couple other guys offered suggestions on how to automate the updates. I went from rsyncing it to building outright, and neither one of them worked out with the way the site is coded. Later that week I started working on updating some other code on the site and just never made it back to the manual.

Anyway, today's my day off, but I did make some headway on Thurs and I think I may have a way to make it live next week. I moved the layout docs to another include dir, which is first in line, so now I can do an rsync, I think.

Some sort of CVS thingy that sucks down the docbook sources and chucks some XSLT at them?

It's just not right to have to do that sort of thing manually.

Actually it looks like I was doing a wget of the manual source and untarring.

I've managed to get the includes out of the manual's directory, so I can format it and still do an update without losing the header, css and footer data.

At any rate, the new(er) version is live. I still need to finish a bit on the formating and then do the updates. But at least it's better than the old version.

(I'm on dialup right now, so I'm hesitent to start anythign before the DSL tech arrives to replace my modem)

The live manual is still manual/ from year 2000 although manual2/ being eight months old isn't that bad, as it at least mentions superglobals and register_globals... but it's not live. So, just checking up on you 🙂

lol. They fixed the modem the next biz day.

/manual is coming up as /manual2 for me. I can't get to the servers right now to check it -- the admins shut down ssh due to the hackfest over the weekend.

I still need to create the update script and check it. As soon as that's done it should be updated weekly or so.

Philip, are you sure it's not a cache issue?

It's not a cache issue.

Also, how often do you plan on updating the manual? In the future the PHP manual will use something called "livedocs" which should make you very happy, as the manual updates "live" from CVS. It's also much easier to customize. It should be ready by the end of this year so until then maybe this year old version (manual2/) on phpbuilder is okay.
