[RESOLVED] select certain characters

I have a database that will be provided from an outside source.

the datafield for the phone number is housed like this

5555551212

i need to extract this information so it displays as

555-555-1212

I searched around but couldn't find anything specific.

what php function do i use to pull a specific range of digits?

I know it should look something like this.

$areacode = phpfunction(rangeofdigits);
$phoneprefix = phpfunction(rangeofdigits);
$phonesufix = phpfunction(rangeofdigits);

Looks like you can use [man]substr/man

lol .. yeah .. i just found it. that's what i get for asking for help to quickly 🙂

answer would be

$phone = '5555551212';

$area_code = substr($phone,0,3); //takes 1st three
$prefix = substr($phone,3,3); //go out 3 digits and take 3 digits
$suffix = substr($phone,6); //go out six digits and show till end

//now piece it back together.

echo '(' . $area_code . ') ' . $prefix . '-' . $suffix . '';

should display at [phone]
