fopen fwrite can not get to work

$ft = @fopen($_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/'.$thefilename,'w');

	@fwrite($ft,$str);
	@fclose($ft);

I can not get the code above to setup a file on my host what are the problems
originally I put this in the wrong forum
