Stripping out words from string

In my url, I have the following: mysite.com/index.php?myvariable=can-be-anything

Sometimes the word variable can have words in it that I want to filter out.

e.g. adult words, profanity.

So, since I want myvariable to be "clean", how can I strip out a list of words I have. The word list will only be about 10 different words.

As devinemke suggested, you can pass str_replace() an array of terms you want filtered out (first parameter), and replace them with an empty string (second parameter).

Note that str_replace() is case-sensitive, so if you're looking for some case-insensitive filtering you'd need a function like [man]str_ireplace/man (if you have PHP5) or [man]preg_replace[/man] with the 'i' modifier.
