How to abbreviate a form input

Hi,

my question goes like this: I've created a small form in which people have to write down a first name. After that it should show that name abbreviated on the next page.

E.g.: When you input John, and click the submit button, you're supposed to see only a J.

(if it helps to know why I need it: it's supposed to create sources/bibliographies that conform the lay-out rules that were given by a teacher)

You just need to access the first character, either by index or by using [man]substr/man.

Try this,

$name = substr("" . $_POST['name'] . "", 0, 1);  

Though, it's recommended to add "security" to $_POST['name'] before.
