Any good books?

Hi. I know a decent amount of PHP, but I would like to find a book to enhance my knowlege of the language. Does anyone know of any good somewhat cheap books for an intermediate to advanced level programmer? I don't really care if the book covers MySQL, because I have another book for that. Thank you 🙂.

To be honest the linked post is old, and I would not look to much into it. It might give you some ideas, but if there are no new books with newer release dates you should think twice before buying.

But if there are newer books, then that is the thread to post mention of them in. It was stuck to the top of the forum for exactly that reason.

And I would post there if I knew of any good book. Unfortunatley I don't. I can see why all posts about books should be in that thread, just wanted to make sure that the poster in this thread noticed that the newest post was from about 11 months ago.

11 months is not that old for a book. Huh, the author's royalties probably wouldn't even have covered the advance yet after only 11 months. Two and a half years isn't that old for a book. (The question is whether the book is significantly older than the thread, and unless the poster included a publication date....)

Normally I would agree. But not when it is about computers and programming. I did a simple search for books containing the word PHP in the title and was published 2006, and got 25 results. About half of the books contain both PHP and other stuff like MySQL. But it still leaves about one book per month, making me think that there have to be a books that are new and cover PHP 5.2 that was released in november 2006.

Of course, if there are a really good book that is a year or even two years old. Of course the reader have to understand that there may be changes that are not covered. Heck, I am using a book from 1999 that covers HTML, but I know that I can only use it for the basics.

I bought the digital version of the Zend Certificaton book to see what it was all about. Requires some knowledge of PHP, but it listed all the important things to know, plus gave a few good tips, then I could google on the stuff that I wanted to know more about later, now knowing what to actually google for.

Four months ago. Which means that if there are any such books then they're still being written, after which that they'll go into production, with distribution and sales after that.

I thought it safe to assume that poster was already familiar enough with the static nature of books to be aware of that.

But don't look at me; I've never read any of them (well, with one exception, but only on a technicality).

Well, my one book was published in 2006 and it is mostley up to date. Same with alot of the books at my bookstore. Now my library on the other hand, well, their two books on PHP are like 5 or 6 years old 😃.
