can really be any mix of numbers and decimals points (its a software version)

have you tried echoing the contents of "$text" to make sure there is a match?

And is there a portion of that text (do a "view source" if needed) that matches exactly with the example we've been using to base the regex on, including spaces, newlines, etc.?

you know, i feel bad constantly asking for regexs... is there any program out there where i can enter a string and it will create a regex for me?

Not really... I mean, how could it possibly know what you're looking for in that string, and what conditions must be met?

The best thing you can do is read up on regular expressions (this is a great site, and if nothing else don't forget that Google is your friend) and then start messing around with the preg_ functions, honing up your skills. If you're bored, make up some complex string that has a single token of information you'd like to extract, and figure out what regexp pattern you'd need to do so.

i really have been trying... i wont ask here now until ive tried several things and checked to make sure my input is correct (i just spent 10 minutes going crazy only to find that i was matching against the wrong url)

however, the reason ive been doing so many regex's lately is purely do to my .com re-design and adding feed modules and sites that dont have an RSS feed tend to need regex's

ill check out that website and like u said make some patterns and play with em

I have a fantastic tool for you: [Regular Expression Editor]

It's offered by the same group that makes PHPEdit, and it really does do a nice job of non-server regular expression stuff. It won't teach you anything about expressions, but it would at least help you in learning what's found instantly 😉
