CSS help please

Hi. I am currently working on a website for a project at my school. I am doing all of the PHP and CSS work myself, but I do need some help. I have PHP covered (because I was already assisted here with that 🙂), but there is one thing below I am struggling with. As you can see, the image I attached at the bottom is what the basic style of my site should look like. I know how to do the gradient in the back, but I am struggling with the table. The table is somewhat transparent. I am pretty sure you can make a table this in CSS, but how? Thank you 🙂.

I can think of two options:

Create a separate background image for the inner container (surely you're not going to use tables for non-tabular data, right? 😉 ) with colors and shading to give the illusion of transparency.
Assign a background-color to the inner container and then use an alpha filter (which is not part of the CSS2 standard but will probably work on most of the latest browsers).

You could also use a partially-transparent background-image for the container.
(Okay, that will choke on IE6, but at least it doesn't rely on IE specific ActiveX filters).

Ah okay. Yeah, I read a bit about the alpha filter (not sure what it does, but I will learn), so I think I will take that rout. Thanks 🙂.
