not using local php.ini file

i have installed apache and php onto my computer a couple months back.. but for some reason, i still cant get local php.ini settings to be recognized (ie PHP is supposed to try php.ini in the folder your script is in before the default php.ini file.)

i simply cannot figure out why it isnt working. i've tried to get it to work a million times, and yes i've restarted. phpInfo() reveals that it continues to use the default php.ini file

any ideas about what might be the problem?

Are your running PHP as an Apache module (the most common method)? If so, php.ini is only read and processed when Apache is started. I believe you can only use local php.ini files when running PHP in CGI or CLI mode. (Caveat: I'm not real strong on this install stuff.) You can, however, use local .htaccess file settings to accomplish the same thing (except for a few restricted settings which can only be set via php.ini).

As NogDog points out, using an .htaccess file is another option of changing PHP directives for your website. Have a look at Appendix H to see which ones can be changed using .htaccess and which one's can't.

Under the old Apache Module mode you were able to manipulate the PHP settings from within a .htaccess file placed in the script's directory.

For example you could turn off the php setting "magic_quotes_gpc" with this line in .htaccess:

php_value magic_quotes_gpc on
