Member Storage...it it safe?

I want to give my members(community members) say 5-10mb of disk space to store files for their webpage...etc. But with piracy/porn at it's rate these days, members may sooner or later store questionable material on it, such as illegal music, porn pics/clips, or copyrighted material like clips from a tv show or something.

With a disclaimer, am I relatively safe, as long as I regularly monitor the storage? Or how should I go about this?

By safe I mean, safe from getting copyright notices and such about files being stored on my account/server.

The only person who can really answer that for you is a lawyer who is in the field and who works in your country/state (as laws vary from place to place). Anything anyone tells you here probably at best is an educated guess - and at worst will be plain wrong and possibly lead you into legal trouble (or even legal trouble for the person who gave you the wrong advice).

Undoubtedly you will want to have some sort of Terms of Usage agreement for your users, but how it should be worded and how it must be agreed to in order to be legally binding is well outside my area of knowledge, so I'll leave that to your attorney (or anyone else here who wants to take the risk of providing legal advice ).

If you look at a site like MySpace and read their Terms & Conditions, you'll get an idea about how they handle user-supplied content - you don't hold any rights to the content, but instead you only maintain a limited "license" to display the information, where the user posting the content actually retains all licenses and responsiblities.
