PHP reinstall

I'm trying to reinstall PHP 4.4.5 on a Linux box. I'm removed the old directory but I still have an old version on the system.
I type the following:

$ php --version

The system returns:

PHP 4.3.9 (cgi) (built: Nov 7 2006 05:00:50)
Copyright (c) 1997-2004 The PHP Group
Zend Engine v1.3.0, Copyright (c) 1998-2004 Zend Technologies

How do I get rid of this version ?

Try a "whereis php" to see if you can find PHP files.
