Boo for JS Errors!!

Just an FYI... while browsing in FF with Firebug installed, there are 5 or 6 errors that keep coming up, all the time on every PHPBuilder forum page.

OAS_RICH is not defined newthread.php (line 385)
OAS_RICH(pos);

Component is not available (line 320)
undefined

The first error is repeated like 4 times, the last one just started showing up today.

Not sure what's going on... maybe you should look into it.

Others are:

OAS_RICH is not defined showthread.php (line 383)
OAS_RICH(pos);

OAS_RICH is not defined editpost.php (line 385)
OAS_RICH(pos);

yeah.. and the adverts are also the reason the site at times is as slow as seaturtles on ice

You wouldn't get OAS_RICH errors if you didn't block the ads.

the ads are a necessary evil to keep this place running, noone likes them, but they pay the bills...

and PHPBuilder can't change them, they aren't in control of the ads...

Can't you at least limit the bandwidth they use? I got so fed up with massive flash file ads from some advertisers that I added the board to my ad block list. Send them some feedback that they are defeating their own purposes around here by using them.

i still say give users the option to have a paid membership that gets rid of ad's all together... i wouldnt mind shelling out 10-20/yr for a membership here

They're present because you're blocking some element in which they're declared. I get no JS erros in the FF or Opera JS consoles. No, paid membership doesn't work, it's been tried.

If you block the ads you're essentially stealing use of the forum. You can disable flash for this site, that way the file would be smaller and the forum doesn't lose out. It would serve a .gif instead.

You aren't serious are you? Are you trying to control people browsing the internet? Saying "no" to advertising is not against the law. Advertising is an invasion of privacy and thought patterns.

How so? They're not forcing you to look at them, they're just there. And it's not like there's a CSS div floating around on every page that takes up 90% of the realestate. But please, do explain how it's an invasion of privacy? It's not giving your information away... it's just an ad. Like on the side of a bus, or on a billboard. You're not required to look at it. And they're not an invasion of privacy. So I'm not sure your comments hold water.

Some kinds of advertisement may be an invasion of privacy, e.g. the tailoring of advertisements in an email provider's website to the contents of the emails sent and received by an individual.

i use a hosts file, so my browsing through the internet is relatively clean and ad free and firefox does a great job of handling the cleanup or empty ad space...

that being said, ive still always held that if the site wanted to charge 20$/yr to be an ad-free member id gladly donate that in a heartbeat

Nope, not joking in the least. Nor it is any invasion of your privacy. If we come into your home and show them on your walls, THEN it's invasion of your privacy. This is OUR house.
I suggest you read this excerpt from the AUP:

You will not attempt to access any protected sections of the sites or Forums, nor make use of any hacks, cracks, bug exploits, etc. to bypass or modify the features of the forum software at any Jupitermedia site.

The ads keep the forum going, and in effect by bypassing them, you are stealing the use of the forum.
