How to create Microsoft Office Documents using PHP

Hello everyone,

I would like to use php to view, edit, and create Microsoft office Documents such as .doc, .xls, and .ppt using only php.

In addition I would like to open these documents within a web browser and not the program itself.

I googled and this is the best site that offer the most information,

All of the code does run error proof, but some work for example creating a word document and it doesn't have the functionality I am looking for.

If you have any suggestions or can direct me to a tutorial on this subject, it will be of great help and appreciation.

Hey cmp241,

thx for your pvt message. However, I do NOT have an answer to this, as I have never tried to do it, and will never try to either. MS Office just creates a lot of junk codes and requirements, which I do not want to deal with.

The sites I built are mainly scientific in nature, and output from them typically occurs in some delimited text format, as it is easier to transfer between systems.

Leatherback, you're probably right, there's probably a lot of objects or something that you need to know to connect to the microsoft program.

However, many people do use windows, which they use office products, so I think it would be a tool worth learning, if it's applicable to your work, but you're a mad scientist right, lol. So you don't have to worry.

We use a method of saving out as xhtml (for MS Word and Excel) but using a .doc or an .xls extension. Works a treat and we've had no issues with it

I should point out that using OLE automation interfaces (via the COM class) in MS Office, is not a technique which is sufficiently robust for production use.

If you use this interface, your web application and web server will ultimately fail. This is because it's not intended for unattended (server) applications, and will pop up a dialogue if it fails, hanging the web server thread and consuming memory indefinitely.
