Writing XML error

I add articles from to my site which are sometime sent to me in MS Word. Below is a copy of something I copy and pasted into a web form then added to my MYSQL.

When Boyd was last in Christchurch – after spending time with the Burleigh Bears in Queensland – he accumulated a remarkable 280 points in 18 appearances for the 2005 championship-winning Linwood club side.

I then have a PHP script which added this to a XML docs, works fine apart from the - it's not the minus sigh from the keyboard because XML gives it a error and once i've changed it it works fine. There are a few other symbols like this is well.

how can i get php to remove all these fancy text and have just "plain text" on the run when i write my xml????

There should be an option to copy the text(Something like "text only") in Word. Other way is to copy it first to some normal texteditor and copy it from there to form. Third way is to remove the formatting either server-side or in clientside(javascript). I didnt have the need to do the third one so someone else can help with that or try to google it for yourself.

A couple options on the PHP end:

Output the text through the [man]htmlentities/man function.

echo "<xml_tag>".htmlentities($text)."</xml_tag>\n";
```

Output the text as CDATA:

echo "<xml_tag><![CDATA[$text]]></xml_tag>\n";
