[RESOLVED] mail function

hiyya, im using the mail function in my script. I realised that it isn't working from my laptop but when i run the script at uni it is working perfectly and emails are sent. I then did some reseach and found that i need a SMTP server. I downloaded one from the net from the softstack.com website.

I changed the php.ini file with the following changes, set SMTP to localhost ect.

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = localhost
;SMTP =
smtp_port = 25

; For Win32 only.
;sendmail_from = localhost
sendmail_from = my emailaddress

However, when i ran the script it takes time to respond and I have also been getting the following Warning: mail() [function.mail]: SMTP server response: 550 Invalid recipient:

i don't understand how the recipient can be invalid when it works at uni. May be it is the server i don't know

I know many people in the past have had this problem. So if anyone knows whats going on let me know. Thanks

HI, you will first have to test that your smtp server is working correctly.

Try telnetting to localhost from a command prompt and running an smtp conversation:

telnet localhost 25

HELO localhost@localdomain
<200 OK ...
MAIL from: [e-mail]
<200 OK ...
RCPT to: [e-mail]
<200 OK ...
DATA
<200 OK ...
blah
blah
.
quit
<200 OK

The server responses should be a 3 digit number and start with a 2 (200 above as an example) if every thing is ok so far. It will be a 4 if there is a temporary error and a 5 if there is a permanent error.

If you need more help on the smtp process google for SMTP conversation.

Once you are sure that your smtp server is working correctly then try the php script again.

how to i know what my domain name is, everything works ok but when i get to the data part a message doesn't appear. i did the following
DATA
FROM: <TEST>
SUBJECT: ARROWS
.
i dont get no uoput after this

HI,

You can make one up or use localhost.localdomain. So long as the sender and recipient are valid email addresses the default config of most smtp servers will allow anything in the HELO line (though they may reverse lookup your ip address).

Have you tried it? what results did you get?

it says connection to host lost and i used localhost as the domain. okay when i input the mail from and rcpt it works. however, when the DATA is inputted then i have to wait for a minute before a message appears saying that the host is lost. In the actual user interface i am using as the SMTP server it says that the message failed to reach and wasn't a success

this is bugging me i don't know what the problem is HELLLLLLLLLP!

Hmm,

What may be happening is that the server is silent when you have issued the DATA command.

It is waiting for you to enter the text of the email
try entering a few lines
to tell the server you have finished type a full stop (a dot) on a line by itself i.e.

.

the server should then respond with a numeric code (hopefully 2xx) then you can type quit and enter to break the connection.

i am still having the same problem. after data is typed i enter a meesage, this time over 3 lines and again ended it with a dot after 3 mins i get a response that the connection to local host is lost.

Help. On my smtp server interface it says message failed to send. I get the following error:
HELO localhost argument must be a FQDN or IP domain literal

any idea what it means

Er..yes..the argument to the initial HELO must be a fully qualified domain name or IP address.

ensure that localhost.localdomain is in your hosts file (if it isn't then add it and restart the smtp server)

or give your ip address on the HELO line

hey,
its still not working. Can i ask you wempy what smtp server you are using. Do I need to change any of the firewall settings or anything. The problem is that the to and from email addresses get recognised but the message fails to send. I have been trying numerous things the past week but to no avail.

if anyone has had this problem before could you let me know how u resolved it, thanks
