permissions issue

HI Brad,

I've been reading the site all day trying to discover a way around this. It seems there might be a way! I don't think I can change the permissions. I am a lowly newbie.

So... can you FTP into the site via PHP, create the files via a script (thus giving you the permissions), and make changes to the files via this script.

Is this a feasible solution?

Is there a tutorial I can read about permissions? I bought a web host and they kept telling me to chmod to 777. That seems like a bad idea. I got hacked because of that ( I think ).

Sounds like you've experienced one very good reason not to use shared hosting.

Other than that... find a host where the PHP process runs as your own user account (e.g. CGI). Other than that, I'm not sure what to tell you. The file has to be writable by the 'www' process, and if you're on a shared server that doesn't enforce safe mode, it would seem as though any user on that server could affect your files via the www process.
