PHP date change

Hi,

I'm pulling some dates for a news section on a website in the following format:

DATE_FORMAT(news_date, '%Y.%m.%d')

which is the way I had to format it to have the dates come out in the right order. When I sorted with the month first, the 2007 dates appeared at the end of the news, below the 2006 dates, which was incorrect.

My question is, now that I've pulled the dates out in the right order, is there an easy way for me to reformat the dates using php?

Er, why? If the news_date is a DATE/DATETIME column, MySQL can do the sorting for you...

Just seems like overkill to format/interpret the date so many times.

EDIT: Example query to order by a date field yet displaying it differently:

SELECT DATE_FORMAT(`news_date`,'%d %M %Y') FROM `myTable` ORDER BY `news_date`

For some reason, the dates were coming out in a fine order for 2006--with the latest dates at the top, but the 2007 dates were coming out at the bottom, i.e. where the oldest dates should go. Maybe I was sorting it wrong, however.
