[RESOLVED] Checking time passed

So I am writing an inventory program that tracks equipment that is rented out. So lets say that someone checks out a pair of skis and they are due back on 4-17-2007. And the person returns the skis on 5-2-2007. Is there any PHP function that says how many days have passed since 4-17-2007?

To clarify the script will get the date 4-17-2007 from a database and make a timestamp from it. Then it will call the time() which will return the timestamp for 5-2-2007, in this case. Now I want to compare the two and come back with the number of days that has passes between them. I have looked at the date time functions that might be applicable, strtotime, strptime. And I guess I just do not understand exactly how those two functions work.

if possible you should do this with the native date/time functions of your RDBMS but if you must do this in PHP...

$date1 = '2007-04-17';
$date2 = '2007-05-02';

$date1_ts = strtotime($date1);
$date2_ts = strtotime($date2);

$days = 0;
while ($date1_ts < $date2_ts)
{
	$date1_ts = strtotime(date('Y-m-d', $date1_ts) . ' +1 day');
	$days++;
}

echo $days;
