host/server type help plz

how can i find what kind of server (web server, ftp server,mail server,dns etc)
a live host is?

I use nslookup to find live hosts but i need to know what kind of host each one is,
how can this be done?

im kinda new to php so if its a noob question plz move

I need to create a text file with all live hosts for sertain ranges with a discription of each server(type),

the output i have so far is: <<IP=62.169.194.42 LongIP=1051312682 Host: go.tellas.gr>>

what i want to do is something like this: <<IP=62.169.194.42 LongIP=1051312682 Host: go.tellas.gr is a WEB-SERVER>>

Its for a colledge project and im stuck, i dont now what to do from this point on,
i can post the code if it helps

i dont know if that task can be accomplished at all - after all, AFAIK you would have to portsniff the ip and then hope that they have a service on the default ports.

that sounds good, at least its the only help i got,

how can i do this? something like sockopen?

i tryed get_headers to identify web servers but if the host isnt a web server the script takes ages to complete so i cant use it even for ranges as small as 10 ips... is there some other way to do this?
