[RESOLVED] Convert a given date to the day of the year

Can anyone help me with this?

I need to convert a given date in this format (ex.2007-04-16) to the day of the year (ex.105). I know how to do this for todays date with the date() function. I need to compare todays day of the year (0-365) to a past date.

I need to be able to mark 30 days past from a hire date to today's date.

ex.

hire date 70th day of the year
today 105th day of the year

date() can take a timestamp as the second parameter if you don't want it to use the current time.

Also, you can use two unix timestamps and do your math in seconds instead of days.

One solution would be use explode() to split the date into parts (2007-04-16), then input these into mktime() to create a unix timestamp for your given date, that you can then input into date().

It would however be neater to do the maths in seconds once you have timestamps, as sugested by veridicus.

How do I convert a given date (Ex.2007-11-1) into seconds since todays date?

I am building a directory where I have the hire date in the above format. So when a new employee gets hired I want to display a new employee icon for a month. Then get rid of that icon.

Weedpackets sugestion is a good one, use strtotime() and time() like so:

$timedif = time() - strtotime($YOURDATE);

This will give the number of seconds difference between now and the date in question, if $YOURDATE is your date you want to convert

$thirty_day_doy = date('z', strtotime($start_date . ' +30 days'));
