Dynamic Text Manipulation

Hello all,

I am new to this forum, and new to PHP. Nevertheless, I am trying to work something out and am hoping I might be able to get pointed in the right direction here.

Is it possible to manipulate font that is selected/highlighted (by clicking and dragging your cursor across it with a mouse) using only a combination of (x)html, php, css, and MySQL? By manipulation of text, I mean, for example, can I allow a user to change the font size, the type face, or the font color of selected/highlighted text? Or, can I allow a user to turn selected/highlighted text into a hyperlink?

Any thoughts or advice will be appreciated.

Hm. You may want to take a look at FCKeditor. The functionality you describe requires Javascript. Anything "dynamic" on a webpage is going to use Javascript or AJAX. PHP / MySQL handle the backend operations, such as storing the text once it's been tweaked.

You could also take a look at Google Docs, which has an editor similar to the one above. Google's isn't open source, though.
