Money Format, easy question plus how to put ASCII back into a varible

How do I turn numbers into a money format. I tried using money_format('%i',varible) but it doesnt work. I got that function from the php manual website. is there more I need to know about this function. is there a better one ??? here is how its typed

<?php echo money_format('%i',$product['productPrice']); ?>

Is there a mysql funciton that formats numbers into money value. All i want is to make a number. any number like 1,2,4, 500, 3000, to be formated to something like 1.00,2.00,4.00,500.00,3000.00. and if the decimal places are already placed properly, then it will leave it alone.

Plus I want to put ASCII back into a varible. So when someone submits a form with paragraphs and such, when I out put it back onto the website, the paragraphs will still be there instead of being in one glob.

I normally just use [man]sprintf/man or [man]printf/man:

printf('$%.2f', $product['productPrice']);  // delete the "$" if you just want the number

For the paragraphs, issue, take a look at the [man]nl2br/man function.

Thanks alot nog. appreciate it. BUT, there is one little problem. On one page I have a script that gets some specific data from the database from a specific row and brings it on to the page. some of the data is a price. When I use the printf, its fine. But. On another page there is a loop. where it gets a whole bunch of data and loops multiple rows of products and prices. this is the script I use for it.

<?php echo printf('$%.2f',$row['productPrice']);?>

for some reason Im getting this when I view it from the browser

$2000.008

but on the page where I use a query to get just one row, its looks like this in the browser

2000.00

How do i get the first one (2000.008) to look like the second one (2000.00).

ok nevermind I fixed it. on the page where it loops multiple rows. I used the sprintf instead of the printf. Why is it that sprintf works on loops but the printf doesnt ?

the reason you get $2000.008 is that printf doesn't need to be echoed.
It is like print or echo.
When you do echo printf( ... ) it prints the string and then echos how many characters were output.
