Changing the url

I was wondering if there is a way to change the url displayed in the persons web browser who visits my site. For example, if they type in "http://www.mysite.com/main;lkjeudji" then I want to change the url displayed in their web browser to "http://www.mysite.com/main" and display the main page. Do I have to use header() in order to accomplish this? Or is there a way to directly change it? Thank you.

Depending on exactly what you are wanting to do (I'm not sure if I fully am comprehending your question correctly), the answer may vary.

If you are wanting people to be able to type anything beyond website.com/main and still receive website.com/main (i.e. website.com/main%20;+dasdas) you can use mod_rewrite to do this.
