What is the actual role of Zend in PHP?

Do you think PHP will exist without Zend?

Their role is to sell PHP-related products and services to make money for their investors.

I think PHP would continue to exist if Zend suddenly went out of business for some reason. Whether or not it would continue to evolve as quickly or be used more or less by businesses would be another question for which I have no way to speculate.

I've always seen Zend as the commercial side of PHP. It gives it that little bit more credibility
