Problem with php and my mysql

I have been having problems connecting mysql server to my php script,i even used this script to have a

confirmation that my connection was successful to no avail;

/ Connect to the database server
$dbcnx = @mysql_connect('localhost', 'root',
'mypasswd');
if (!$dbcnx) {
exit('Unable to connect to the ' .
'database server at this time.');
} else {
echo 'Database connection established.';
}

Please test the code on your server and see if you'll see a response on your browser like 'Database

connection established'

Each time i execute a php script on my server that is meant to connect to my database,select it and

retrieve data it instead gives me a blank page(just like the code sample above) instead of the data i requested.

Can someone help me with that.i'm stuck!is there something i have dnot done or i am missing cos that's the basis of develping a php website in the first place.
I even tried to use the mysq root-username and passwordi registered the server with during my installation but to no avail.

Get rid of the @ in front of the function call and print the error returned from mysql:

$dbcnx = mysql_connect('localhost', 'root', 'mypasswd');
if (!$dbcnx) {
exit('<p>Unable to connect to the ' .

echo '<p>Database connection established.</p>';

I have removed the @ on the code on my php script(work.php) and this is the error message i received;

Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\work.php on line 10

So what next??
remember here is the code;

...Can i connect from my mysql command line client and produce the desired output i need...?

if not how do i correct the error statement shown above??

If it's the command line prompt on mysql,i have installed it successfully on my windows platform..how can i connect mysql with php from the command line prompt and have a confirmation that the connection has been established ??is that possible

Why do you start 3 threads in the same forum about the same problem? The threads are 10339743, 10339634 and 10339635. One thread is enough.

There doesn't appear to be a mysql_select_db involved there anywhere - that might be part of the problem? If you've not selected a database to connect to, surely mysql_select_db is an undefined function?

Either that or it's a weird version of mysql...

What version is it?
