Running a live stats on website

Fisrt of all, may I asy I'm a 99% noob in PHP, besides setting up my XMB boards I don't know much about PHP...

Lately I've been assigned to make a website on wich I must run live stats based on user inputs on that website...

It's about fishing.

So in example, let's say I got 5 fishermen registered.

There would be 3 main fields for the stats.

- Location (of the individual fisherman)
- Fish category (shellfish, squid, octopus etc.)
- Fish count

On the front page, I would like to show mainly total amount of fish is cought by the members of my page, regardless of other categories like location and category.

Also, it would be nice to have some variations on the front page like Daily Average and Top Fisherman of the Week and/or of the Month.

Also, it would be cool if I could make a table with listing which I can sort by criteria such as sorty by location, sorty by category, sort by fishermen...

I will try to make this page, it will take some effort but I think that it is possible...

And I need a starting point, so anyone here willing to give me some help?

Starting Point: Use mySQL or PostgreSQL or some Database!!!

If you utilize a database, you can easily do what you want. Let the database to the summation of how many fish have been caught. Let the database tell you who has the highest catch of the month / week.

Essentially the calculations can be left to the database, and you'll get your answer in the result (rather than having to manually do it). And if you utilize the database, you can easily sort by whatever criterion you want (location, caught, first letter of name, etc.).

OK, that's a good lead...so where do I start, I would like to have a similar example to see because I certainly can't make this from scratch, I wouldnt ask here If I could 🙂

-do u have a database installed? ( i assume u do, u have XMB boards)
--what DB is it?
--does it have a front end (phpmyadmin etc..) or can u work with databases

-how glorified of a site are we talking?
-are those the only fields u are tracking?
-how often is this data going to be entered by one person (e.g. once or updated alot)
-how are u expecting to out put the data and format it (charts, tables, graphs, textually)

I'm testing the site locally, I have xampp, phpmyadmin also...

DB is mySQL

i have a phpmyadmin front end

glorified meaning? not shure what does that mean...how much traffic, how popular the site is?

site is still under construction...

i would like to track all fields and be able to get the results from each...but i would not have more then 10 fields...

output would be text for start, but it would be nice to have graphs (like fitday.com ie.)

I succesfully made the login/logout script work. I even adjuted it so it looks just like my website theme, so it's fully implemendted, I guess...

The only thing that I need take care of is the status bar or whatever is it called, a line that will show "Welcome User, you are now logged in. Logut here" on the top of every page on my site.

Or that isn't neccessary?

The login script has a "remember me" feature and it works.

The phpMyadmin shows 16 users in "users" table of my database, so that's also working, since I've tried with that many logins 🙂

So, to put it briefly;

Can I put sort of breadcrumb bar on top of the site with "Login / you are logged in / Logout" feature?
After I put php parts in my website pages, the containter went to left, and now all the pages that contain scripts (login page, register page) are aligned to left...although they have the same exact code as the ones without php and those show centered both in IE and MF

Well, I hope I make some progress...

Hope I'll start that database soon 🙂

1.) Now you're talking about modularization and even to an extent MVC. A templating system is your answer. Have a look at SMARTY (smarty.php.net).

2.) My guess is, without looking at any code, there's an extraneous " somewhere mucking up the validity of the HTML. Have you tried validating your site? Even if it's just part-done, validation will show some errors that cause it to look wrong.
