i'm using print '<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="2;URL=http://www.domain.com/admin/page.php">'; to send the user back to the form when a field is empty. Is there a way to use javascript:history.go(-1) to send the user back so that all his inputs will still be there?

Not all browsers run Javascript. And not all keep the form populated when you go back.

The safer way to handle it is, when you see a field is empty, is to redraw the page and the form, populate all the fields that they did enter and show red boxes around any fields they left blank.

you are talking about a simple form with just one page - right? otherwise - store the values in a session. in this case - stick with etully's advice. if values are missing/invalid, have the formhandler call for rerendering the page and show an error message.
