So yout think it is better than OSCommerce? I have autoinstall of both/either on my hosting but have not got around to playing with them yet.

i was told oscommerce had a lot of cool modules... more so than zen, but zen is easier to setup?
Zen Cart is an offshoot of OS Commerce.
what about a cart that you pay for, and you can get it customized, you pay $1000, $2000 or $5000 and they customize it for you.

i've always felt OSC is quite a bit bloated and has a lot of fluff noone ever really needs, typically with out of box, you really only need a couple items from it.
to the OP, of course paying someone to customize would probably the best as you can get it the way you want it, if that's what you are looking for, that is kind of out of the scope of your question, and if you have $5k to blow on it, go for it, it'll probably suit your needs better
I agree with stolzy.
Wasn't zencart started because the developers thought that OSC had got too bloated.
Having said that, ZC has a lot of options and can get quite confusing (at least I found it quite confusing) to configure.
are you allowed to customize zen cart admin area, panels, interfaces, and evolve the product into a new evolve product thats customized, not just on the front end, but back end and admin area?
From looking at their website, I see that it is distributed under the General Public License; so yes, you can customise it.
Can zen-cart connect with a yourpay.com credit card or chase manhattan credit card api? can it pretty much be connected to any api?
all your answers are at their site, look around, it'll be quicker than asking us normally
how long would it take to setup a fully functioning ecommerce site adding and deleting products and connecting to api
If you keep asking questions that could probably be explained by the website, I'm pretty sure people will start ignoring you. No one's going to do your work for you
what I was asking is a general question, how long does it take to put together a basic fully functioning ecommerce web site? In general, in a generic sense, the ability to add and delete products, have a shoppping cart and be able to check out and see the orders in the admin area.
very generic question for a basic shop with 100 unique products.
wouldn't it best be answered by the people in the zend cart forum? after all, ALL the people there obviously use the product, while here only a handful of people probably use the software. so a question like "how long would it take to setup this software with x amount of products" could be answered more accurately and faster by people who use the software all the time, than in this forum, who may have never setup an e-commerce script before.
whether or not he's talking about zen or not, asking that kind of a question in general will not likely be able to be answered
gallerydesigner, think of it this way, if someone asked you how much it costs to build a car with X amount of addons/etc... do you think you could answer it very well?
just like this, there are so many variables involved, whether you think it's general or not, it is not a general answer...
we could start throwing hour totals and dollar amounts, but in the end, whatever answer anyone gives will be of no use to you...

Using OSC or ZC, about as long as it takes to install the software and then add your inventory. That is what they are for. It is the skin styling, local taxes, shipping rules etc that need customising and take the time.
We went from oscommerce to zencart in 2004 and never looked back. Zencart has an awesome team of core developers and very helpful forums, as well as having relatively clean, secure code imho.
Of course you can always take a test-run of both zencart and oscommerce without installing anything at http://www.opensourcecms.com.
