[RESOLVED] Find nth character, remove it and everything after it..

Hi there - I think I need to use the function 'preg_match' but I'm unsure how to do so. Basically what I'm doing is converting a metacafe source to a thumbnail.. for example:

http://www.metacafe.com/watch/426491/max_payne_2/

becomes

http://www.metacafe.com/thumb/426491.jpg

I've used str_replace with /watch/ to make it /thumb/ - thats no problem, it's just the last bit that needs removing as described in the title.. i.e the 5th slash along and everything after it. Any ideas?

You may be able to do it all at once with [man]preg_replace/man, e.g.,

$uri = 'http://www.metacafe.com/watch/426491/max_payne_2/';
$pattern = '#^http://www\.metacafe\.com/watch/(.+?)/.*$#';
echo preg_replace($pattern, 'http://www.metacafe.com/thumb/\1.jpg', $uri);

How about explode-ing it into an array and then using the array functions?

$stringParts = explode('/',$string);
$newstring = implode(array_slice($stringParts,0,5));
