PEAR:DB vs PEAR:MDB2

Hello there!

Ive been using PEAR😃B for quite a while now, and i noticed that PEAR:MDB2 has superceded it. However there are a couple of things that DB let me do that MDB2 wont allow...

• psudocode : DB -

  // Connect up to 2 different DBs
  $oConnection1 = $db->connect($server1,$options);
  $oConnection2 = $db->connect($server2,$options);
  
  // Get the user information from the first DB
  $arrUser = $oConnection1->getAll($strUserSQL, $mode);
  // Get the location information from the second DB
  $arrLocation = $oConnection2->getAll($strLocationSQL, $mode);
  // Update the 1st server with the 2nd server information
  $oConnection1->query("INSERT INTO users SET location ={$arrLocation[0]["id"]} WHERE id = {$arrUser[0]["id"]}");
  // Close connection
  $oConnection1->close();
  

  Ok looking at the above one im basically opening up 2 seperate connections at the same time, then getting the data, using it then closing the connections. You may look and go why am i only closing connection 1?
  Well for some reason whenever you open 2 seperate connections at the same time you only ever need to close down one and it disconnects them all... i dont know why exactly...
  
  I tried doing something similar to the above thing in MDB2 but it wont allow you to have 2 simultanious connections open, if you manage to get it to open 2 it just works off 1 regardless. So i know the most logical method here is to go
  
  Open DB1 -> getAll() -> Close DB1 -> Open DB2 -> getAll() -> Close DB2 -> Open DB1 -> query() -> Close DB1
  
  That sounds perfectly reasonable, but isnt this slower making 3 connections and 3 disconnections opposed to making 2 connections, 1 disconnection?
  
  I dont know how DB/MDB2 work internally with all honesty, i havent taken the time out to look at it, so im not sure if the way im using DB to begin with is wrong, as im guessing it is as it doesnt disconnect the way you would expect, however it seems to do the job with less work regardless of if its being used correctly or not.
  
  So which in actual fact would you boffins say is faster?

Are the two databases located within the same server? If so, I'd say it would be faster to use a single query to access both databases.

No they are on 2 seperate servers, i dont think them being on seperate servers or the same server is an issue... im just trying to work out if:

1) Pear😃B is meant to be able to do 2 connections at once?
2) If its faster to connect simultaniously or only have one active connection and disconnect/connect as needed?
3) For querying is MDB2 faster than DB
