replace stuff in string

Hello, when saving a something from a field in to the database i need a script that replaces a few things. for example:

"I like apples in the morning AND coffee at night"

I want the above to look like this:

i-like-apples-in-the-morning-and-coffee-at-night

I have googled this but havent found anything. Anyone who knows how to achieve this?
