Hello..I have a php question

Hello all
I just need a little help. I'm using php with dreamweaver to develop a student website for my school (am also teaching myself php at the same time) and I feel i've reached the point for more experienced help. I want to create a database for my website that will contain news and old articles (no more then a paragraph or two). I also want the site to have the articles displayed on the right hand side like this website does with its news/updates (http://www.allhiphop.com/). Also..if you click on one of the links it takes you to another page with news...on this page they have a drop down menu that shows past news from years ago. I really want to do a site like this for my student pop/summer project. I just need to know where to start!. I know I have to use a recordset, but thats where i'm lost (i don't even know if thats right). I tried to google for a tutorial, but i'm not sure if the words i'm search for concerning this topic are even correct. If some one could send me a link to a tutorial or the words to search in google for it would be a blessing. Also, what is the best way to learn php. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day.

1.) please use a topic title that gibes a little more info - your topic applies to probably around 99% of all the threads here :-P

2.) a great tutorial resource is the zend site. see especially part 8. also, especially for this news-system purpose, codegrrl should have some valuable info for you.
