How do I combine PHP with AJAX?

I'm trying to learn AJAX. I did the w3c tutorial but unfortiantly
It is with ASP and not PHP. who do I do that that:

response.expires=-1
response.write(time)
%> 

With PHP?

(I looked over google and over this forum but failed to find something that can explain to me how to combine AJAX with PHP)

However, how do I get the 'username' field of the html form?
I tried $GET and $POST but failed.
