[RESOLVED] Excluding Characters / Phrases

I researched on google, and I found ways to exclude a bunch of characters, such as A-Z, but no luck as to what I need. 2 things:

If I have a set varchar, such as
$100,000
How can I make it exclude the $ and the , so I could do

$cost = '$100,000';
$pricepaid = '$90,000';

if ($pricepaid < $cost)

And also, I need to get the surname of some files that i'm uploading.. such as
flashfile.swf
so how can I exclude the "flashfile." and just leave the swf?

Store the data as an integer (or other numeric type) in the first place?

Well I need it to display the way that i've shown.. So Adding the $ wouldnt be a problem, but how would I get all of the commas in the right place. MySQL/PHP doesnt do that for you. Not that I know of.

Sure it can, with [man]number_format/man:

$money1 = 1234567.01;
$money2 = 12345.99;

if($money1 > $money2)
    echo 'The bigger amount is: $' . number_format($money1, 2);

If you just want the extension of a file, you can use [man]pathinfo/man with the second parameter set to PATHINFO_EXTENSION.

$filename = "test.swf";
$extension = explode(".", $filename);
echo $extension[0];
[code=php]

That would output:

swf

The only problem with that type of solution is that you don't always know that there is only one '.' in a filename. Also, I think you meant to output $extension[1] in your example, though a better approach might be:

$filename = "test.swf";
$extension = explode(".", $filename);
echo $extension[count($extension)-1];

Then again, I'm a lazy coder, so when a one-line solution will do, I tend to go with that.

		$extension = explode(".", $sigfilename);
		echo $extension[count($extension)-1];

I have one jpg, and two swf's. But the onl result I get back, no matter which one it is, is jpg. Is it because I didnt select a row perhaps? So it is only choosing from the first one..?

EDIT:: Okay I added a Where and it works now. Thanks everyone!
