Logging a closed session

I am stumped on this one. I believe javascript may be the answer, but maybe not.

I want to log the time someone leaves or closes their browser when they are on my website. So, it's pretty much a logger.

Logging when people arrive, and the path they took is fine. But after that I'm not sure about.

And ideas?

You could put an Ajax script on the page that contacts the server every 30 seconds with a message that identifies the user and the page. Short of that, there's no reliable way to know when someone leaves your page. The javascript onunload event will tell you when they leave the page and when you hear that, you trigger the Ajax notifier. It would be more accurate than the 30 second notices but it won't work if the browser crashes or the user's Internet connection drops. If you combined the two, however, you would have a solution that would work reasonably well.
