I'm starting to see more and more sites converting variables from $_GET method to raw url, and am now in need to do the same thing. meaingin i need to convert

www.mysite.com/mypage/thisfile.php?id=29282

into

www.mysite.com/mypage/29282/

I'm thinking its more of a server trick like putitng PHP code int the 404 page to detect url and pull content based on stuff,

but me not hosting the site I cannot do that, thoughts?

It is typically done on Apache via URL rewriting.

Depends on what you mean by "server hack". mod_rewrite is a feature of Apache, and is no more of a hack than any other feature you might use (such as custom 404 pages).

Meaning if the server isnt Apache, or if it doesnt have it enabled (although I saw you can manually enable it) then it wouldnt be possible.
