Can we read GIF89a metadata with PHP?

Hello,

I'm going to be putting a few images onto a website, and I'm thinking about a good way to include captions.

There's no database access, and in the past I've simply used text files containing the captions. But this creates an extra file that needs opening, reading, etc...

All images will be GIF - is there any way to read the plain text that can stored in a GIF89a image with PHP?
