[RESOLVED] Quick Link Referencing of another URL

First, I am new to this forum and if this question has already been answered, please let me know where to find it. Also, I am relatively new to PHP - although I have been using for my sites, forums and wikis for ages - I am finally trying to work on the code for myself.

I have two sites, one is a PHP and MySQL driven CMS and the other is a PHP and MySQL wiki. Lets call them:

www.site.com
www.wiki.com

What I want to do is to be able to reference wiki pages from within my main site, using a shorthand reference like

[[W]]WikiPageName

that not only replaces the [[W]] with the wiki URL, but also converts the string to a URL.

I have bought a PHP book and am working my way through it (slowly) and I have come up with the very basic code following:

$URL = [[W]]$Page;
$Wiki = "http://www.wiki.com/";
$URL_2 = "<a href='$Wiki$Page'>$Page<a>";

I am hoping that something like this would change [[W]]WikiPage to a link with the text WikiPage.

My first thought was that when I got the code right, the place to put it would be in the top of the page template, but then I thought that perhaps in the config file that is called by each page.

I am sure that this is probably not a huge problem for someone well versed in PHP, but I have only just made my first PHP form script, so I am trying to get my head around it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

You're not replacing anything.

Try this:

$url = 'http://www.wiki.com';
$string = '[[W]]Air_Fighters have a lot of cool features';

$string = preg_replace( '/(\[\[W\]\])(.*?)(\s)/', "<a href=\"$url/$2\">$2</a> ", $string );

Load up your content into a variable (lets call it $string), then run the preg_replace() above on it to get the replacement you want.

I understand now how the code should be written, thanks to you cgraz, but I still can't figure out how this will work in my site pages.

Remember I am new to this. 🙂

First, I can put the code that cgraz gave me into the page template (in the header) or in the site wide config file. I am guessing that will work fine.

Second, how do I get the code to work when the page switches to HTML? I created a test page with the code from cgraz in the header and some sample code below, such as

(php code from cgraz here)

<HTML>
<HEAD>
</HEAD>
<BODY>
[[W]]WikiPage
<?php echo "[[W]]WikiPage" ?>
</BODY>
</HTML>

I know that these won't work, but I didn't know what else to try.

There is a filter module for the course management software I use. It creates quick links to Wikipedia from within the course software. I am not sure if I am allowed to post external links here, but the Wikipedia filter is found at:

I originally tried to go into that code and alter it to reference my site and I couldn't get it to work, but I might have to try again.
