Shopping basket - what an experience

I have nearly created my first shopping cart. The code is not perfect, in fact some of guys would look at it and lock me up, however its taught me so much.

From start to finish its taken about 2 months on and off. I experienced problems along the way, where I was stuck for up to 3 days but I worked around it with dirty code, and then when I thought I had nearly cracked it, I ended up missing stuff out.

The problem with carts is that you dont know where to stop. You could go on for months adding new features.

At the end of the day this has been very educational and taught me a lot. Looking at the code I am sure it can be improved, streamlined and what is using 10 lines of code probably be put up in 4.

Congrats. These first experiences are definitely such a great way to learn PHP (or any other language for that matter)

Are you going to be using it in production? or was it just a learning exercise?

Just a learning exercise.

I have always wanted to create a cart. Looking at the code there are lots of things that I can do to streamline the code.

I am not a programmer, and don't go around saying I am one. Some of the php code that I see on other scripts goes straight over my head.

I can get by with most projects, but my code is always very basic. If someone asked me to come up with a simple database driven site I could do it. However if someone asked to create an auction site, this would be a different story.

I usually borrow exisiting scripts and help that I find on the web and modify and strealine this for my own projects or borrow stuff that I have done before.

You sound like the average PHP Developer then, although, many will claim they are programmers 😉

Probably a basic auction site, once I cleaned up my basket.
