Cropping the last 3 letters

I have a variable that is a file name eg winword.doc but the section after the . changes per file. There are three posibilities

.doc
.jpg
.0
.gif

The post collects the file type and uploads the file, how can I trim what ever the file type is eg from winword.doc to winword, but so the bit to be trimmed can be changed. Can I just trim three letters and for .0 just put else if and trim one, and how would I do this?

Yes, that is how I get the files extension, but how do I delete it from the filename?

So from

$file == 'hello.jpg'; //to
removeextension($file);
echo $file //Echo's Hello

Here is one way:

$file = 'hello.jpg';
$file = pathinfo($file, PATHINFO_FILENAME);
echo $file;

If you are using a version of PHP before 5.2, then use:

$file = 'hello.jpg';
$file_parts = pathinfo($file);
$file = $file_parts['filename'];
echo $file;
