404 Error

This is my second day of working with php.
I just zip installed it. Double checked everything appears to be fine. I just get a 404 when I try to view my test page.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Windows 2003 IIS6 ; php 5.2.3

Just to open a test page I pulled from an instructions site...

An error 404 means that the file was not even found. What path did you try? localhost? You probably used a wrong file path.

That's what I don't get it is in my root with other html pages that are displaying just fine. The php folder should be on the same drive as the root folder, right?

Did you name your file correctly? Hidden file extensions setting might cause you to think "index.php.html" is actually your expected "index.php".

Yes. 🙁 It was a notepad document. I double checked just now. It's a plain php.

Did you make sure that you're not "hiding file extensions for known file types" in Windows ?

I went to the root folder, clicked properties.
And all of my extensions are listed within that folder.

It's IIS6.

Grrr.... I have checked file permissions, the isapi filter, the ini file for doc_root. I went cmd and tried php -i and got a bunch of code running by - as suggested on a php.net bb.
How can I debug when I can not get it working?

Moved thread to Install forum. While we're here... have you tried reading through the FAQ stickied at the top of this forum? I've posted a "how-to" for installing PHP when using IIS6. You might try reading over that in case there's a step you've missed?

If nothing else, try removing all references of PHP you've added to IIS and follow the how-to guide.

Also, when you say you've "checked permissions" ... what does this mean? Did you ensure that the IUSR account has permissions for the .php file in your doc root? Have you also ensured that the IUSR account has at least Read/Execute permissions for the folder you installed PHP in?

Speaking of PHP folders, what's the path to the folder you installed PHP in? Does it have spaces?

From your install faq:
e. Add “;C:\php” onto the end (the semicolon is a path separator)
f. Create a new System variable called PHPRC – set it’s value to the
path to the PHP directory (e.g. C:\php)

I need some clarification on e. - I am lost at the ;. Can you post what your full variables look like?
I only have PATH D:\php\

My paths are fine; it was my home directory. I deleted the php5isapi.dll file in a previous remove all traces of php and start from scratch attempt and missed replacing it.

Thanks Brad! Your faq helped out quite a bit. I was certain that I did not miss a step in the third or fourth time I went over my processes.

To be clear for others reading this, it was the Web Service Ext. --> Properties --> Add --> D:/php5isapi.dll
