[RESOLVED] little str_replace or so help.

I'm trying to find out if a textarea input has a number of words in it (array)

while($row = mysql_fetch_array($query)) {
												$word = $row['word'];

												if((str_replace($word, "", $textarea1)) || (str_replace($word, "", $textarea2)) {
			$nogo = ($nogo + 1);
}
}

then something like:

if($nogo >= "1") {
// do whatever cause one or more words were found. 
} else {
//process script
}

Issue is that weather or not nogo should or should not be more then or equal to 1, it always assumes it is.

my question is why? can't str_replace be used like this?
I also tried iwth strpos === false with same result 🙁

If you'll look in the manual for [man]str_replace/man, you'll see that it always returns a "string or an array"... which will most likely evaluate to true. But then again, why would you want to be replacing strings if you're simply trying to get a count of them?

Instead of using an incrementing counter, why not try [man]substr_count/man ?

$nogo = substr_count($textarea1 . $textarea2, $word);

Also, note that if your example if() statement is outside the while() loop, you're only comparing the number of matches in the last row returned and ignoring the rest of the rows. Also note that you shouldn't have quotes around the 1, since it's a numeric value.

hey, thanks for the reply.

I haven't the time to test it out at the moment but i will check this thread resloved when i have tested it out tomorrow or wednesday morning 🙂.

Good point with the "1" without paranthesis.

As for the if() statement outside the while statement - correct me if i'm wrong 🙂 - but it shouldn't matter because $nogo has one added to it IF and only if there is a result (str_replace not working as it should doesn't help, but... point is there 🙂) found in the while statement.

Presuming it does this on occurance of $word being found in the textarea1 or 2, then it should presumable only increase by 1 per time word is found?

So for every 1 word found it does + 1, therefore $nogo should process something different if it is greater then or equal to 1. Maybe i'm wrong on this note, but that's how i wanted the script to work 🙂

Ah, ignore that, I dunno what I was thinking.

Actually, if you're only interested in whether a single word is found, you could add a [man]break[/man] in your loop since further processing after a single match has been found is pointless.
