Calculating my wage

I wonder whether this is too big a project for me but I will try.

I would like to create a PHP-script where I can enter when I met at work, when I went home and how long a break I had.

Then this should be multiplied with my hourly wage. For instance if I met at 10:00 am and left at 5:00 pm and had 1:00 hour break, my hourly wage would have to be multiplied with 6 hours.

On monday-friday after 6:00 pm, on saturdays after 3:00 pm and on sundays I have an allowance which I would like to be added seperately. We could call them $eveall, $satall and $sunall (cause they are different).

Finally I would like all this to be saved into a file and to be shown on my html-page with the script for each month from the 21th to the 20th (for instance should July be from June 21th to July 20th).

Could anyone help me with this?

Whether or not this is a big project really depends on your experience level. The calculations should be fairly trivial. If you want to retain historical data, you'll need a database to connect with. What in particular do you need help with?

I am sure that someone can help you when you encounter a specific problem. But you should really give it a go yourself, the [man]date[/man] function is a good place to start.

Putting the script together, basically.

I don't know how to convert dates into hours (for instance 1:40 hours = 1,67 hours).

I haven't worked with databases either.
It's not to be used on the internet but on my private IIS 7 server at home.

OK, do you have PHP installed? Do you also have a database server on your computer that you can connect to? MySQL would be my choice, but you could also use Access (shudder).

SQLite can handle gigabyte sized databases, but it is not so good at handling too many concurrent users. Since you are designing it for a single user (or multiple users not likely to be accessing the database concurrently), SQLite is suitable, especially since it is an embedded database engine that does not need a separate installation.

Excellent suggestion. Wish I'd thought of that, but I'm usually doing high availability stuff so SQLite rarely comes to mind...

No need to do that. Assuming you have installed PHP5, you can enable SQLite support by enabling the PDO extension with the SQLite driver.

If for some reason you wish to use {HP4 instead, then you can download the DLL and enable the SQLite extension. Note however that this uses an older version of SQLite and SQLite database file format.

Ehm, what do I need to do to enable SQLite then? There doesn't seem to be any downloads at http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.pdo-sqlite.php. :queasy:

That's the good part 🙂

You need to enable the extension in php.ini

Basically, check that extension_dir points to the correct directory, e.g.,

extension_dir = "c:/php/ext"

Then, uncomment these lines:

extension=php_pdo.dll
extension=php_pdo_sqlite.dll

Save php.ini, restart IIS and you should be ready to use SQLite. Of course, since you have no background in databases there is much more to it than just configuring the software 😉

Mine says

extension_dir = "./"

That means the extension directory is the same as the directory that holds the php.ini file, right?
And I'm guessing that the files php_pdo.dll and php_pdo_sqlite.dll should be present in that folder - well, they are not.

Not quite. That means that the directory that is holds php.ini is regarded as the extension directory. In my setup, the extension directory is actually a subdirectory of that, "./ext".

Hmmm... Strange.
When I uncomment the two lines you asked me to, my FastCGI stops working (the thing I had to install in order to get PHP working)

I just saw that the two lines mentioned are uncommented in the very end of my php.ini file - and FastCGI works!

The very last lines of my php.ini file show this:

[PHP_PDO]
extension=php_pdo.dll
[PHP_PDO_SQLITE]
extension=php_pdo_sqlite.dll

Will SQLite then work, do you think?

Ehm, I don't know how to try it seeing as I have never worked with SQLite nor any other databases before.
And reading http://php.net/sqlite didn't help me much.
