When do you think IE6 will become dead? and by dead I mean, so insignificant that when you create a website you don't even consider it.

For arguments sake, I'll use the stats at www.thecounter.com and when IE6 is 1% or below for a full month. IE5 got 1% last month and I have to say I don't consider it anymore.

Then when it finally happens I'll give a prize to the winner and I'll have a party. In case anybody wondered, I'm trying to get something working in IE6 at the moment and I'm dreaming of the day I don't.

Let's hear the guesses.

It will take a number of years because IE7 is only available for Win XP SP2 or higher. Previous versions of Windows like 2000 and 98 still have a significant install base. So I wouldn't hold my breath for IE6 to drop below 1% market share.

Not to mention a legal copy of windows...

My guess is 2 years from now

It will take time before it is 1% or below. My guess would be 8 years, people tend to hold on to old stuff way to long. This is especially true for people that don't know computers and doesn't have a legal copy of Windows, and people that don't know computers and have automatic updates turned off.

But why wait until it is 1% or below? It depends on who you want to browse your site, if you want the categories of people mentioned above you have to wait. If not you can disregard it much earlier. I would say that you can disregard it when it is below 5%, I think that should be in about 3 years.

          Heheh.

I predict that we won't have any computers in this office running XP on a regular basis by the end of this month.

Trying to do some 508 compliance testing today, and everyone on our team has a Macbook, so IE testing was a bit of a pain. 🙂
