[RESOLVED] Apache Redirect Question

Hi all

Don't know of a good apache forum so I thought here would be best choice!

I have a website that has been running for sometime now and many of the products for sale on this website have been indexed by SE's.

Shortly I will be overwriting this website with new pages/site structure etc and I need to make sure that if someone, for example, used Googles site: function or used a favorite bookmark to retrieve one of my indexed pages from the original website, I need to immediately redirect them with the use of .htacces to the homepage of the updated website (which is hosted on the same server/folder).

I have seen examples of how to redirect all requests for one server to a different server but I need to redirect OLD/non-existent urls to a new URL which is the homepage, without redirecting the genuine webpages of my new site.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you have mod_rewrite enabled, try something like this in an .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
# check if requested file exists
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
# if not, pass it to index.php
RewriteRule ^(.*) /path/to/newsite.php?old_uri=$1 [QSA]  # QSA preserves the query string

Thanks for the prompt response.

This indeed redirects which is great but it leaves the original requested URL in the address bar - is there anything that can be done about that or not?

i.e. because I'm redirected to the homepage I just want to view the address www.mydomain.com in the address bar and not www.mydomain.com/old_requested_url.php?id=123

Well if you don't care what URL they tried, and you just want to redirect all broken links to the home page, get rid of the QSA option and just redirect to "/".
