Sending SMS messages

I know that you lucky americans can send sms messages via email if you're with a particular carrier, but I wandered if anyone knew if you could do that in th UK?

Contact your preferred SMS provider (I've used Clickatell in the past) - you should be able to send messages to any major UK network for just a few pence each if you buy in bulk.

Yeah I figured that would be the answer. I just wondered if there was any way around it like there is in the states. Oh well

And something I have considered, but I don't think the gf would be too happy...

It is very GOOD that companies have to pay to send SMS via UK networks. If they didn't, we'd get far more SMS spam.

An email -> SMS gateway which required no authentication or payment would open the flood gates to spammers.

True. But then how does the states get around that? I know that often the recipient pays to recieve each individual text so I guess there would be a similar law that stops people cold calling mobiles over there.

check out mblox.com and mxtelecom.com they're the two names in sms i hold the most respect and trust for.

you could always connect a sim to your pc and cobble together your own in house gateway. with a t-mobile sim you can get sms for 3p which is a cheaper price than most aggregators will give you without some serious volume.
