How to convert UTF-8 to ASCII?

Not entirely sure of this myself (still rather confused by Unicode and character encoding in general), but [man]mb_convert_encoding/man or some other multibyte string function might be what you are looking for.

Strictly speaking, UTF-8 IS ASCII, provided you only use the ASCII subset of it.

If you don't only use the ascii subset, those characters have no ascii equivalents and hence you can't.

So

1. If the string only contains ascii characters, it's already in ascii
2. Otherwise it's impossible.
