[RESOLVED] need username

I'm running an intranet using PHP and IIS and need to allow access to different pages for different users.

How can I get the username from the server? I've looked at phpinfo() and any relevant values are set to 'no value'

Any ideas?

How about asking them for the username at the beginning. You can also ask for a password. That way can make sure unwanted users dont access the wrong page.

If you're on an intranet, and you don't mind if only the intranet can access the page, try doing this:

Open IIS manager
Go to the properties of the folder containing the scripts (or just the script itself if there's only one)
On the Directory Security tab, click the Edit button under Authentication and Access Control
Make sure "Integrated Windows authentication" is checked below, and uncheck the "Allow anonymous access" box at the top

Make sure you test the scripts under various conditions (different computer, differnet browser, etc.) to make sure this works for you.

bradgrafelman, I have not done this type of authentication before so how do you get the username entered in the php script.

Well, after you make the changes I noted above, do another phpinfo() and look at the indeces/values in the $_SERVER array.

is it the same process if we implement authentication in apache ?

Sorry for the delayed response - AFAIK, no, IIS is a Micro$oft product, so that's why it can automatically retrieve the Windows logon name.

I haven't tried to get Apache to use Windows Authentication, though my guess is that it's not so easy (if possible at all).
