What's Your Hourly Rate?

Hi all,

DO NOT DISCUSS THIS PARTICULAR LINE OF QUESTIONS
If you do consulting work on an hourly basis, what's your hourly rate? If you're working for 'da man, how much are you willing to work for on an hourly basis?

If you do per job consulting, how do you feel the hourly rate vs. the per job rate compare?

If you're doing this as a career, I've found it's often best to work out how much you would be paid on a yearly basis, eg if you think you're worth xx.xxx a year (I'm working this out in GBP if that sounds a little low to some people), then that's approx £yyy a week which works out (if you work a 40 hr week) at £zz.zz an hour. Or $zz an hr.

Thats probably what I'd put myself out there as.

As for the per job vs hrly rate? Thats entirely up to you. It might be worth thinking about that on a job-to-job basis

About hourly rate vs per job rate. It is of course up to you, but if you decide to use a per job rate make sure that you specify exactly what is included and that everything outside it will be charged extra. If you don't do this, the work always grows after you have the contract. A simple change here, a tweak there becomes many hours in the end.

Or Salary. That is, you work until they say stop :o)

I think the proper term is "work till you drop". I've never seen anyone on salary have their boss say "Okay, that's enough"....

I have: "We're over budget, the customer has not renewed the contract, so we're laying you off." :rolleyes:

Or if you had an incredibly honest boss: "I've grossly mis-managed this project, so to make up for my mistakes I'm going to have to lay you off." 😉

you don't work where i do... once i hit my 40, i'm done... if i get over my 40 before my scheduled time off on friday, i leave early, you just need to get into the right place 🙂

Ha.... I work where anything over 40 is time and a half!! I'll gladly work 60 to 70 hours per week 😉

obviously you aren't "salaried" and i'm assuming (correct me if i'm wrong) you don't have a wife/kids... because once you do, most don't want to work that many hours... nice thing about salaried, i get paid the same every two weeks, whether i work 35 or 45 hours, though i've never worked over 40

I usually figure out how many hours it will take me to complete the job, then I give a quote based on that. I also quote an hourly rate for anything above and beyond the greed upon scope.

I try to do the same, but my estimates usually suck. Usually work hour my hours then multiply it by 2 and I get close.
