recently my usage of php has changed quite a bit.
i used to always use shared hosts, but i think i need something else now.

i need:
subversion
ssh support (for rsync through symfony) (optional)
pear
php.ini access
php5
python-2.5 and the other stuff needed for trac

however i do not have too much experience with managing php installation myself. so what type of hosting do you suggest?

You can get all those things with shared hosting if you search around. Of course, a dedicated server will let you tweak til your heart's content.

I've had a fairly decent experience with www.aplus.net
They're not perfect but they're great for the price. You can get a full dedicated server for $99 a month.

I'm using managemybox.com right now. They've got some good specials on dedicated servers.

The only thing about SSH on a shared server is that I wouldn't trust it. For that I'd go at least VPS if not full Dedicated.

yes im thinking about going vps, though the maintenance is a pain

shared host just tend to cause problems, at least it's very hard to find a good one

What sort of problems have you had with shared hosting? I've never had issues with shared hosting, aside from when the host I was using "lost" all my data. But having investigated since, they weren't a very good company.
